How To Recieve a Critique

  1. Do not talk while your work is being critiqued.  This is especially important, because trying to defend your work can put the people giving you the critique off and prevent them from giving you their honest opinion.  At the end of the critique, you may have some specific questions that you want answered.  This may be how the readers felt in regards to a certain scene or character. Or it may be clarification on something that was said during the critique.  At this point it is acceptable to ask them.
  2. Remember that everything people tell you are their opinions and suggestions.  Taking them into account can help you to improve your work, but ultimately it is your work and you have to decide which suggestions will improve the story that you are trying to tell.
  3. When receiving a critique, be respectful of the people who have read your work.  They have been kind enough to give you their time and energy in critiquing your work.
  4. It is considered bad form to work on the piece that you have sent out for critique prior to receiving the critique.
